Pediatric Dentistry ( Dentistry for children), is a branch of science studying diseases and treatments of deciduous and young permanent teeth of children until the permanent dentition is completed.
The main aim of pediatric dentistry is to prevent teeth problems and to canalize children to a future without caries.Procedures that are performed in this regard are called ‘preventive dentistry procedures’.
Preventive procedures for preventing tooth decays include, education about oral and dental health of the child and his/her family and nutritional habits. Preventive dentistry procedures also involve superficial fluor and fissure (crack) sealer procedures
Fluor is an element that prevents tooth decays and strengthens tooth structure. When teeth eruption is completed for the first time, newly erupted teeth are usually more prone to decays and they have low resistance to decays due to uncompleted maturation of tooth enamel. Fluor strengthens tooth enamel and protects against acid attacks and therefore it helps prevention from tooth decays. Professional, superficial fluor procedure is a preventive method that can only be applied by dentists. Superficial fluor should be applied by dentists once in every 6 months.
It is a flowable filling material that can close deep fissures (grooves) which are more prone to decays and located on chewing surfaces of teeth, this procedure prevents bacteria from reaching into this area and therefore it prevents decays. Fissure sealents should be checked once in every 6 months.
Extensive caries observed in younger children as a result of mixing sugary foods like with honey, sugar or biscuits into milk and soaking the pacifier into sugary foods during sleeping especially in early childhood are called ‘baby bottle tooth decay’. .
One of the most important problem observed in childhood is traumatic injuries and they should be treated by considering the age, of the patient, degree, region of injury, related tissues and general condition of the patient.
Appliances called ‘Space Maintainers’ are required for keeping the space of permanent tooth when deciduous teeth were lost in early period. Space maintainers are appliances that can prevent orthodontic disorders in the future by preventing movement of adjacent teeth to the extraction site and therefore having impacted permanent tooth or eruption of tooth from a different place.
